I’m Jeff Banks. I’ve repaired air conditioners in Utah County since 1982, and on 100-degree July afternoons, “it’s running but the air is warm” is the call I get most. Here’s the same walkthrough I give people over the phone, in the order I’d check things, including which fixes are safe to do yourself and which ones will make the problem more expensive if you keep the system running.

The five-minute checklist before you call anyone

Run through these in order. A surprising number of “broken” air conditioners are one of the first three.

  1. Thermostat set to COOL, with the target temperature below the current room temperature.
  2. Fan set to AUTO, not ON. This is the single most common cause I see. On ON, the blower runs constantly and pushes room-temperature air through your vents between cooling cycles, which feels exactly like the AC blowing warm air.
  3. Air filter. Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, that’s your suspect. Utah County’s dust, especially during late-summer monsoon winds, clogs filters faster than most filter packaging assumes.
  4. Breakers. Check the breaker panel for the AC and furnace/air handler circuits, and check the outdoor disconnect box mounted on the wall near the outdoor unit.
  5. Is the outdoor unit actually running? Stand next to it while the system calls for cooling. The fan on top should spin and you should hear the compressor hum. Indoor blower running while the outdoor unit sits silent is a classic pattern (more on that below).
  6. Look at the copper lines. Ice or frost on the refrigerant lines or on the indoor unit means stop and read the frozen coil section now.

Cause 1: The fan is set to ON instead of AUTO

On AUTO, the blower only runs while the system is actively cooling, so every bit of air from your vents is cold. On ON, the blower runs 24/7 and circulates unconditioned air between cycles. Nothing is broken. Flip it to AUTO and see if the warm-air complaint disappears.

Cause 2: A clogged air filter

Your AC needs airflow to move heat. A packed filter chokes it, so the system runs long, cools poorly, and can eventually freeze the coil. Swap the filter (most Utah County homes should check monthly in summer, not the “every 90 days” the box says, because of our dust) and give the system a few hours.

Cause 3: A frozen evaporator coil

If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil, your AC physically cannot cool, and running it risks damaging the compressor, which is the most expensive part of the system. Do this: set the thermostat to OFF for cooling but set the fan to ON. The moving air thaws the coil, usually in two to four hours. Never chip or pry at the ice. If the system freezes again after thawing and a fresh filter, the underlying cause is usually low refrigerant or an airflow problem, and that’s a technician visit.

Cause 4: Low refrigerant from a leak

Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up.” If it’s low, it leaked. Signs include warm air with long run times, ice on the lines, or a faint hissing near the coil or line set. This one is not a DIY item; the leak needs to be found and repaired, then the system recharged to spec. One honest note for older systems: if your AC was installed before 2010, it may use R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced. Recharging an R-22 system is expensive enough that it changes the repair-or-replace math, and we’ll tell you that math straight before any work.

Cause 5: The outdoor unit isn’t running

Indoor blower running, warm air at the vents, outdoor unit silent: the usual suspects are a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, or a failed compressor. The capacitor is the most common single part we replace all summer; it’s the component that gives the compressor and fan motor their starting kick, and Utah’s heat is hard on them. A capacitor is a quick, inexpensive fix for a technician but dangerous to DIY, because capacitors hold a charge even with the power off.

Cause 6: Leaky or undersized ductwork

If the air is cool at the vent nearest the indoor unit but warm in far rooms, or your system was converted from a swamp cooler at some point, the ducts themselves may be leaking cooled air into the attic or starving the system of return air. When it’s an emergency and when it can wait

If the house is climbing past the mid-80s indoors on a hot day and you have young children, elderly family members, anyone with health conditions, or pets at home, treat it as urgent; indoor heat builds fast in Utah’s July and August. Close blinds, run ceiling fans, and drink water while you arrange service. If the house is holding somewhere tolerable and it’s evening, thawing a frozen coil overnight and calling in the morning is completely reasonable.
